The more things change the more they stay the same. Back in 1964 as “Mr. Conservative” Barry Goldwater was wrapping up the Republican nomination for President, Governor George Romney, Mitt’s father, was working furiously to stop him. Sound familiar?
Romney had a partner in crime, the liberal, insider’s insider Governor Nelson Rockefeller. Rockefeller was so liberal that for decades after being called a “Rockefeller Republican” was worse than being called a RINO today. The 2 of them and their followers mounted an unsuccessful “Stop Goldwater” campaign that was the precursor to today’s NeverTrump campaign. They were not successful – Goldwater was popular with the Republican base and had worked hard to elect Richard Nixon in 1960, the first time Nixon was the party’s nominee.
But Romney’s incessant attacks on Goldwater had an effect. They did early damage to the nominee and helped ensure his defeat. The country got Lyndon Johnson, a bungled war in Vietnam, and massive expansion of the size and scope of the federal government from Johnson’s Great Society programs – programs that today have contributed trillions to our national debt. Johnson also appointed 2 uber-liberals to the Supreme Court, Thurgood Marshall and Abe Fortas. Fortas brought disgrace to the Court and was forced to resign due to ethics violations. All this, thanks in part to George Romney’s distemper and lack of principle. Mitt is much the same.
History is repeating itself at least in part. This year George’s son, Mitt, is working hard to destroy the Republican nominee as his father did in 1964. And if he is successful, he will have helped elect Hillary Clinton. And the consequences for the country would be worse than electing Johnson if only because they come after 8 years of Obama.
But we can expect more military disasters – think Benghazi but on a large scale. We can expect foreign policy failures worse than those under Obama. We can expect a hard-left Supreme Court that will undermine the Constitutional protections of our liberty. We can expect free speech to be curtailed, religious Christians and Jews and their institutions to be attacked, the 2nd Amendment to be eviscerated, and on and on. That is what is at stake.
We’ve been down this road before with the Romneys. Let’s learn from history this time. Let’s not only ignore the Romneys, let’s send them on their way. They are not limited government conservatives. They have little time for the Constitution. And they clearly don’t like the base of the Republican Party. Whey they are still in it is in anyone’s guess. But they’re clearly not happy and they have a nearly half-century family record of undermining Republican principles and political goals. It’s time for them to go. If they want Hillary Clinton to be President, fine. But be honest about it. Join the Democrat Party and work for her out in the open.
