Libertarian candidate for President Gary Johnson tells a caller on C-SPAN that he agrees with socialist Bernie Sanders 73% of the time. This is the guy that a bunch of NeverTrumpers have decided to support. Most people might think it odd that a self-described libertarian would have so much in common with a socialist. After all, Bernie Sanders has premised his entire political career on expanding the size and scope of government to the point that it smothers individuals, families, and private associations like churches. Religion is the opiate of the masses, after all. Sanders even took his honeymoon in communist-era Moscow. So, what gives?
The Libertarian Party long has been considered a haven for disgruntled conservatives looking to lodge a protest vote – and it has been that for much of it’s history. But that is changing as Gary Johnson makes clear. His affinity for much of the Sanders platform is troubling. But let’s remember that the modern Libertarian Party was founded in 1971 in Colorado Springs largely to protest the Vietnam War. It was founded by principled, small government libertarians like Murray Rothbard, Ed Crane, and Manny Klausner. And David Koch – yes, that David Koch – was the party’s candidate for Vice President in 1980 on a ticket that opposed Ronald Reagan. But times have changed and so have the people.
Today, the party is characterized by nothing so much as it’s desire for legal drugs, unilateral disarmament, and the homosexual agenda. It speaks volumes that Gary Johnson, the party’s candidate for President, has spent the last 2 years running a marijuana sales and marketing company. And he’s no better on foreign policy or homeland security. When asked at the Libertarian Convention if he thought it was right for the United States to have fought in World War II he answered, “I don’t know.” The crowd cheered. Let that sink in. That shouldn’t be a tough question. What he meant was, “I don’t want to answer because my answer will make me look like a nutjob.”
Here’s the scene. It’s quite a spectacle.
Gary Johnson is also a supporter of abortion on demand, his main stipulation is that government funding not be used. He told Rolling Stone magazine,
“I support women’s rights to choose up until viability of the fetus. I’ve supported the notion of parental notification. I’ve supported counseling and I’ve supported the notion that public funds not be used for abortions. But I don’t want for a second to pretend that I have a better idea of how a woman should choose when it comes to this situation. Fundamentally this is a choice that a woman should have.”
The smartest and most principled libertarians long ago made their peace with the Republican Party, realizing that it was a better, albeit highly imperfect, vehicle for reducing the size and scope of government. What’s left behind looks more like a Dungeons & Dragons convention. And, unfortunately, they look and sound more like the Progressive Left everyday. Principled libertarianism within the Libertarian Party is mostly gone. It has degenerated into an anti-social and contrary libertinism.
So it is no surprise that Johnson finds so much in common with Leftist Bernie Sanders. Yet this is the man and the party that so many NeverTrumpers, in the name of high principle, are running to support in protest of Donald Trump. In doing so they expose themselves.
Here’s Gary describing his affinity for Comrade Sanders:
