Professor Steven Hayward joined us today to discuss the history and future of American conservatism and the enduring legacy of our teacher and friend, Professor Harry Jaffa. Steve is one of the good guys – and he may have the best gig(s) in the country. He is the Ronald Reagan Professor of Public Policy at Pepperdine University, a fellow of the American Enterprise Institute, and a daily contributor to the Powerline Blog. And if his Facebook feed is to be believed, he is a highly trained grillmaster.
Our discussion centered on the current crisis in American conservatism. It’s a discussion that Seth and I started last week and will continue in the weeks to come. The Reagan coalition has come apart and the path forward is unclear. To understand it, we talk about the history of the conservative movement going back to Lincoln and Professor Jaffa’s remarkable prescience in predicting the trajectory and destination of both Left and Right over 40 years ago. Jaffa argued then, as we do now, for a politics based on the permanent principles revealed in nature.
