Kirsten Powers confirmed on Fox News Sunday that “one of the people” who was shopping the Cruz sex scandal story around “very aggressively” is someone who is anti-Trump. This comes on the heals of the Daily Beast reporting that it was allies of the Rubio campaign who were behind this story. In particular, Ms. Powers undermines the credibility of Senator Cruz’s claim that Donald Trump and “his henchman Roger Stone” planted the story that first appeared publicly in the National Enquirer but has since been picked up and expanded in the mainstream media and caused a firestorm on social media.
It is also interesting that Ms. Powers, no Trump supporter, seemed to imply that there were multiple people pushing the Cruz sex story all around Washington. The Cruz campaign must have known that this story was circulating and who was behind it. The Daily Beast says it was people allied with the Rubio campaign. Ms. Powers mentions someone else, apparently a different person than the one referenced in the Daily Beast report, who she says is anti-Trump. There are even reports that someone inside the Cruz campaign says affairs may have happened.
So with multiple people pushing the adultery story, how did the Cruz campaign get caught flat footed? Knowing that the story had been circulating for weeks or months behind the scenes means Senator Cruz should have had a credible response. Blaming Donald Trump for the story when it was actually anti-Trump operatives and Rubio allies who had been pushing the story to every journalist who would listen seems foolish, if only because it has been so easily disproved.

Daily Beast: Rubio Allies Pushed Cruz Sex Story For Months
Separately, the Daily Beast reports that operatives supporting the Rubio campaign had been pushing the story of Senator Cruz’s alleged extramarital affairs for at least six months and had peddled it to a number of “major media outlets.” That means a lot of people have known about this story for a longtime. It means that the Cruz campaign certainly knew about it and likely expended some effort to keep the story from becoming public. More than anything else it means they should have had a better response than blaming Donald Trump. Since a large number of journalists knew that Trump wasn’t behind the story the truth that it was in fact anti-Trump forces pushing it was bound to come out. Especially since names and pictures of the alleged Cruz mistresses were made public.

As with so many scandal stories, it’s rarely the accusation that brings someone down. It’s the cover-up. That’s not to say that the allegations against Senator Cruz are true. We just don’t know if they’re true or not. We certainly hope the allegations are false, if only for the sake of his family. But his response to the allegations was foolish and misleading. That’s on him. It was calculated for short term political gain in the hope that the story could be brushed off as a dirty trick by the Trump campaign. It turns out that is not true and that the Cruz campaign knew it wasn’t true. So the story continues to grow and that is certainly the opposite of what the Cruz campaign wants.
