This election is changing a lot of things. The Republican Party is one of obvious example. But it’s also sending Glenn Beck over the edge – and leaving his media empire in tatters. Beck is a well-known Cruz supporter who is often seen on the stump with the Senator. And he’s certainly not given to understatement. He’s encouraged his supporters to take up fasting to support the Cruz campaign. He also said that Justice Antonin Scalia died so that Cruz would become President. That’s what he tells his supporters, the people he likes – he saves his venom for Trump voters.
Beck called Trump voters “brown shirts” referring to Nazi storm troopers. But that wasn’t enough. In advance of the primaries in Utah and Arizona Glenn Beck invoked the name and, presumably, the wrath of God. Beck claims that Christians who vote for Trump are not listening to their God. Among other things he says,
“Utah has an incredible opportunity. So many Christians have been standing up. But all throughout the South the Evangelicals are not listening to their God. Let us raise a standard in Utah.”
He’s already invoked Hitler and the threat of Hell for defying God. What’s next? And who listens to Beck anymore? His over the top antics are undermining his brand. We may count the Beck empire as one more casualty of this election. The Daily Beast certainly thinks so. And with such over the top rhetoric who will be surprised?
