Erick Erickson had a brilliant idea today. It’s the same idea he drags out of the attic every time something doesn’t go his way and he throws a hissy fit: a third party. He got mad at John Boehner a few years ago – we all did – and was predicting a third party to split the GOP back then. This time around he’s mad at voters for supporting Donald Trump and went a step further, convening a meeting in Washington D.C. on March 17th to discuss running a third party spoiler candidate against him.
Erickson fancies himself a conservative thought leader – the kind of guy who calls the shots in the Republican Party. And now he has decreed that Republicans should prepare a third party bid to counter Trump if he wins the nomination. But Gingrich, who has actually practiced electoral politics and not just talked about it, is having none of it. On Thursday’s America’s News Room he mocked Erickson for being a lightweight and a dilettante. You know it’s about to get real…
Erickson Would Make Hillary President
Gingrich explained, “Have fun. It’s an amusing parlor game. It has no meaning in the real world, but if it makes you feel better. I draw a distinction, I mean John Boehner is genuinely fond of Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) — as I am — and Boehner, frankly I think, would rather see somebody other than Cruz who caused him a lot of pain or Trump who I’m sure he sees as a very strange outsider from a traditional political standpoint. I’m not sympathetic at all to the Erick Ericksons of the world. If they want to form the let’s elect Hillary Clinton club, fine. But they ought to be honest about it. Any effort to help anybody but the Republican nominee helps Hillary Clinton. And if you think giving Hillary Clinton the Supreme Court, having Hillary Clinton run our foreign policy, having Hillary Clinton support the unions to continue ruining our children in schools. If you think that’s acceptable, do it. Erick Erickson’s not playing a risk-free game. It’s not like there is some pure middle way. If he does not support the Republican nominee, he is functionally supporting Hillary Clinton in the general election.”
That’s about as straightforward as it gets. Support the nominee the voters elect or you elect Hillary. And that means you get Hillary expanding Obamacare. You get Hillary appointing judges. You get Hillary’s version of the 2nd Amendment, Hillary’s idea of religious liberty, and Hillary’s idea of sound foreign policy (remember Benghazi, Libya, North Korea?). And you get a heaping helping of Clinton corruption. All because the beltway boys didn’t get their way and they’re on a crusade that Don Quixote would think sounds ridiculous. Guys who talk big about American principles should start thinking more about the American people and less about their personal vendettas.
