Longtime GOP strategist and Bush supporter Alex Castellanos came out today in support of Donald Trump. While not an outright endorsement, Castellanos says that Trump has won “fair and square” and as such deserves the party’s backing. At a time when GOP elites are threatening to upend the table because they didn’t win – all in the name of free government mind you – Mr. Castellanos holds to the touching notion that we should abide by the results of elections.
Castellanos is no radical right-winger. He’s a down the middle Republican who has consulted for Bob Dole, George W. Bush, Mitt Romney, and Jeb Bush. And in hopes of preventing the party’s self-immolation at the hands of an outraged pundit class he wrote to colleagues urging prudence – and a combined effort to make Trump the best candidate and President he can be for the good of the country.
It is too late. There is a fantasy effort to stop Trump, like a fantasy campaign to stop yesterday but it exists only as the denial stage of grief.”
“If our self-indulgent Republican party establishment had really wanted to prevent a takeover of the GOP, they should not have gorged on political power while they failed to do anything to prevent the decline of the country. Our leaders could have led. They could have done more than say ‘no’ to Democrats while offering no alternative.
“They should have stood up for the change Donald Trump is bringing now but they didn’t.
Now, Trump has earned the nomination. He won it, fair and square and we should respect that. Donald Trump whipped the establishment and it is too late for the limp GOP establishment to ask their mommy to step in and rewrite the rules because they were humiliated for their impotence.
If Trump is going to be our nominee, as I believe he is, it is our mission to support Trump and make him the best nominee and president possible.”
Let us hope that this marks the beginning of the end for some of the madder plans to circumvent voters being circulated. And let us especially hope that the vilification of Trump supporters by GOP elites – mostly pundits – will cease. If another candidate can beat Trump so be it, but if not Republicans should respect the will of the voters.
